Yvette Hines Interview
Today I am speaking with Yvette Hines. Good Morning Yvette, thank you for taking time to talk to Fallen Angel Reviews today. I’m excited to be here, Linda, with you and the FAR readers.
Santa’s Helper has a hot and inviting cover. Can you please tell us about it? Well, I’d love to take credit for it Linda, but it was the standard cover for the Phaze Snuggler Heatsheet. However, after I finished my story; which was my first published erotica, I got the cover and thought… it’s David, my hero. Just like the man on the cover, David had sexy dark brown eyes and black hair. He just makes a woman want to crawl on that bearskin rug and curl up beside him. Doesn’t he?
Do you enjoy writing erotic romance? Yes, I love it. Erotica is one of the only genre’s where you can say what you want to say and how you want to say it. To top it off, you get great-unrestrained sex and fall in love all at the same time. Writing erotic romance helps me in my other writing to go out on a limb with the story line, even though I have to watch what I say and do. I will say that becoming an erotica/erotic romance writer made me a better writer.
Do you have to do much research in your writing? Research, research and then some more research. If I want to stay fresh as an erotica writer, I have to study passionate art forms. Even ones that I might find taboo. For instance, with my story Speed Dating it shaped into this BDSM story. I needed lots of information. Deciding to start putting BDSM elements in my writing, I had to read many books, see movies I normally wouldn’t. But, the best research was when I get to meet some great people who are in the BDSM lifestyle and get the personal connection.
Do you get along well with your publisher? Both of them. I have the awesome pleasure of writing for Phaze and Tease Publishing. Both publishers allow me to be creative in the stories I want to write. Occasionally, when I think a story should be short they will say…Yvette, I see this as a longer single title or I think the other characters should have a story. Usually, I’m already feeling the same way.
Have you always had a desire to write? No. Shocked? I know most authors say yes and talk about writing stories since they were in the womb. Me, I had a desire to read. I am a HUGE fan of romance and its genres. I have always been a daydream. So, one day I wanted to read a story…I could find it on the shelf, so I wrote it. That first story is part of my One Reckless Night Anthology that will be coming out in the spring next year with Tease. So, when I write my stories it is important for me to identify on some level with the heroine and fall in love with my hero. If I don’t love the hero, how can I expect others to.
What can the readers look forward to in the upcoming months from Yvette? A few things. This month my book The Marriage Clause, a full-length novel, will be released with Tease in e-book and print, too include a great contest. Followed by One Reckless Night in the spring of 2008. In early summer, 2008 Phaze will release Apprehension an erotic short stories series.
One of the biggest directors in Hollywood contacted you today and is giving you the chance to have one of your books released as a film. Which book would you choose and of course why? First, I’d have to stop screaming to think. [giggling] But, since you asked me this question, Linda, I can now plan ahead and write it down in case I faint. It would have to be The Marriage Clause. Why, because this is my first story I truly ever wrote. It was one of those things that took years to perfect. As I grew as a writer, I went back to it and reshaped it. If I was able to do a second one, because the first was a hit, then it would be Apprehension the erotic series, all the stories blended into one.
Can you share one lesson you’ve learned since becoming a writer that you feel can help others who are looking to become full time writers? Don’t be afraid to stretch to another range. By that I mean, if you get an opportunity to write paranormal, but you have never done it before. Do it. Challenge yourself and do your homework. Always read what you write or desire to write. You will grow.
What kind of books would we find on your bookshelves? On my bookshelf or falling off my nightstand onto the floor? But, seriously, all kinds, Linda. First off, I love erotic historical romances, so every time I find an author who does it well, I add it to my list. I read other historical authors like Cathy Maxwell, Beverly Jenkins, Samantha James Sabrina Jeffries and Cheryl Holt. I own relationship/self help books by authors like Lou Paget. Then I have my walk on the dark side books or paranormals by Emma Holly, Susan Squires and LA Banks. I’d probably say that my largest collection this year would have to be my sensual and erotica novels those ranging from Bridget Midway, Angie Daniels to Shara Lanel. I also attempt to buy new releases each week from my publisher. They believe in me so I support them. I’m finishing my masters so there are a few literary works there as well.
Do story ideas come easily for you? Yes, but some easier than others. Usually I have three or four story ideas on my computer with titles and a line or two about the story. Then if a publisher is asking for a submission and I hadn’t considered a type of story they are asking for then usually I start out with some kind of idea. I never just draw a blank. Then I brainstorm wherever the thought leads me and ask myself what if or tell someone what I’m thinking. My poor hubby gets the brunt of most of the rough stuff, because as I’m fine tuning the story he hears it, over and over again. As long as there are movies, magazines and life…my mind is always considering the possibilities.
For Fun: Name the best appliance ever created? A crockpot. I love mine. It has saved me a many of nights when I’m headed to school, a critique meeting or I open up my e-mail and edits have arrived.
What is your all time favorite food that you hate going without? How many times can I say ice cream? I’ve never met a bowl of it I didn’t like.
Do you ever make New Years Resolutions or just brush that thought aside? No, I make end of the year resolutions. I say, Yvette, you will have this manuscript done by Thanksgiving and this one by Christmas. I like to start fresh at the beginning of the year. No left over baggage.
Do you have another website than http://sasse-yvette-hines.blogspot.com that you would like to share with your readers, like a blog or links to your books? Only have my blogsite, because I like to give the news to my readers as quickly as I get it, as well as run contest from there. However, my books can be found at http://www.phaze.com or http://www.teasepublishingllc.com.
Yvette, I have enjoyed our talk and thank you for taking time to share some insight with us about Yvette Hines. I wish you the best in your writing endeavor with all your fantastic books. It’s been a blast, Linda. I truly enjoyed myself.
