Fallen Angel Reviews would like to welcome
Janet Davies. Thanks so much for taking the time to sit and chat with us.
Hello
Janet, what a nice selection of books on your website. Go ahead: Live with abandon. Be outrageous at any age. What are you saving your best self for? ...I like that tagline. What book would you like to discuss with us today?
I have two new Ellora’s Cave books just released. Maid For Death is a Halloween quickie about a hotel maid who finds herself in all sorts of trouble with a vengeful ghost and a sexy ghost hunter. The other is Seducing Celestine. It’s about a hot, moonlight lover, dedicated seduction and case of mistaken identity.
I notice you also like to write as
Amarinda Jones. What is a day like for
Janet and
Amarinda?
When I am not writing I am doing my office manager day job. It involves scheduling and planning shipments and orders of CDs and DVDs for Musicians. It’s a bit like throwing a dart at a dart board and hoping the bloody thing sticks.
Is it hard to come up with your characters?
No, they generally just pop into my head when I least expect it – usually when I am sitting at the traffic lights or doing something mundane at work. I then have to scrabble around for a pen and make notes.
What intrigues you most about your characters?
I try to make my characters, especially my heroines, average real people who just happen to have something suddenly fabulous happen to them. I think it’s what we hope and dream for. The heroes are the kind of men who will kick the gates of hell down to save their women and you gotta’ love that sort of fierce devotion.
Do you also review books?
I started off reviewing books a couple of years ago to see what was being published and by whom. This was invaluable as I got an idea of the market. I still review books on and off when I can as there are some fabulous new authors out there.
How long does it normally take you to finish a book?
Approximately 4 to 8 weeks depending on work commitments. Luckily I have no conscience whatsoever and I write part of my books at work.
Do you have to go through many drafts/edits to get it polished just right?
Sure. No one can get it right the first twelve times. My editor is really great. She is direct and to the point and tells me if I am writing crap. That’s important as readers deserve a well written romance.
Do you have a certain ritual that gets you in the mood for writing your terrific books?
I would like to say I light candles, surround myself with fragrant blossoms and channel some cosmic inner force within me but that would be a big fat lie. Generally I just sit down and write. I write as I speak and think. That requires just being myself and following my own beliefs and feelings. The only ritual I have is I eat a lot of popcorn while writing.
Who would you rate as your number one author?
I love so many different authors, from so many different genres, so it’s hard to limit it to just one. Janet Evanovich makes me laugh and Tess Gerritsen holds me in suspense.
Do you write on a schedule or as inspiration hits?
I work full time so I tend to write when I have time. In saying that I have woken up at 2am in the morning and have had an idea for a current wip and immediately started writing. My motto is if you have time to rest you have time to write. Yep, dumb motto when you have fallen asleep on the keyboard but it works for me. I’ll sleep properly in my next life.
What does your writing place look like?
Messy and cluttered. I write on the dining room table. Guests know that the dining room does not actually get used for dining when they eat at my place. I believe disorganized clutter helps me write. That’s how I explain not cleaning.
If you could be any animal which would you be?
I used to have goldfish. I would watch them swim around endlessly and think to myself, they seem so relaxed and carefree.
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Caramel – and chocolate is excellent as well French vanilla, strawberry, butter pecan, peach mango….
You have 3 wishes, what are they?
One - that we stop judging people by outward appearance for that is not the real person. Two – that we get a grip and stop fighting over pieces of land and religion. Haven’t we learnt anything from history? And three - that I am given another three wishes.
I would like to visit Australia. I bet the countryside is breathtaking. If you could travel anywhere in the world for thirty days and just kick back and relax, where would you go, would you take anyone with you and why would you chose this vacation spot to go?
In my wild youth I traveled the world quite a bit. I always enjoyed traveling alone and then meeting great, crazy people whom I traveled with further. As to where I would go? There are so many places – Morocco, Spain, Egypt, India. I like the exotic and the unknown. I also love history.
