Christopher M. Lawson Interview

Hello Christopher M. Lawson, Welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews. It's a pleasure having you here with us.
Thank you I'm glad to be here.

Can you tell us more about yourself?
Well, aside from being a novelist, I am a voracious reader. I often read different authors and a mix between thrillers (legal, crime, otherwise) and contemporary love stories. I am not much one for watching television, but I do like to watch movies. I also go for walks on nice days. I'm single (laughs). I also love The Beatles and other classic rock music.

Could you tell us about your current release or soon to be releases?
No More Lonely Days, which was released in August of 2007 and published by PublishAmerica, tells the story of a thirty-two-year old single mother of a sixteen-year-old girl who decide to move out of the trailer they both spent their entire lives in and into a house, hoping to make a new start for themselves. Their neighbor across the street is a single father and widower who have raised his own eighteen-year-old daughter. Unexpectedly, these two lonely single parents meet and fall in love. It basically tells of their new lives together and the healing each provides for the other.

Was there any one person or event in your life that finally inspired you to sit down and write your first book?
Hello...and Goodbye- which was published by 1stBooks Library, now Author House in November of 2002- was inspired by a co-worker I used to work with at a local newspaper publishing house, Turley Publications. She was a few years older than me, but I knew of her from Palmer (Massachusetts) High School when I was in eighth grade and she was a senior. What I tried to do was come up with memories that we could share together. Then I thought how it would be cool if a guy was reacquainted with a woman he knew from some instances in his own life, after she moves into the house next door. Like me, he recalls these few events and develops a "relationship" with her while they're neighbors.

When you are writing do you listen to music, watch TV or do you need it to be completely quiet?
It's funny, when I'm writing I love to listen to either The Beatles or their solo work. Sometimes I'll listen to an "oldies" station or my Ghostbusters soundtrack CD. I need something to keep me from floating into oblivion and it distracts me from what goes on outside of my room. In fact, both books' titles were inspired by songs I'd listened to while writing: "Hello, Goodbye" by The Beatles and "No More Lonely Nights" by Paul McCartney.

How long did it take for your first book to be published?
To my recollection it was published in only two months, because there was little editing involved. It seems fast now, but at the time, it was almost an eternity because I was so nervous and excited.

Do you outline your stories or do you just write as you go?
I have never liked outlining, even way back in high school. I love to write as I go. The process of discovering what comes out as I write is tremendous and exciting. Life is not outlined and so why should writing?

What was the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I ever wrote was a three page western called "High in the West" which I wrote at the tender age of 7.

How does your family feel about having a writer in the family? Do any of them read your books?
My family? Well, my grandma read both books and liked them both. In fact, she still introduces me to other people as The Author. I'm going to be blunt and step on some toes here. My mom hasn't read either and claims she doesn't like to read. My dad read Hello...and Goodbye but hasn't read No More Lonely Days because he said I should get a job before he finishes reading it. My siblings haven't read either. I really have no idea how they feel about it. My mom does tell others about my book but that is about it.

Are there any other genres that you would like to explore in your writing?
I am hoping to write a murder mystery or thriller, but also maintain a quality love story as well, since it was Nicholas Sparks who proved to me that male authors can write love stories.

What is the most valuable piece of advice that you have ever been given as an author?
Don't give up.

What authors and genres do you enjoy reading?
I love to read modern love stories and thrillers. My favorite author is Nicholas Sparks, but I also read the following with great interest and expectation: David Baldacci, Dan Brown, Harlan Coben, Michael Connelly, Diane Mott Davidson, Nelson DeMille, Lisa Gardner, Tess Gerritsen, Tami Hoag, Greg Iles, Alex Kava, Dean Koontz, Dennis Lehane, Phillip Margolin, James Patterson, Richard North Patterson, Anita Shreve, and Karin Slaughter. I am also always reading several other authors but these are the authors I enjoy most.

What book is currently on your nightstand?
Right now I'm reading A Maiden's Grave by Jeffery Deaver, who wrote The Bone Collector, a fabulous novel. After that, I'm going to read Atonement by Ian McEwan.

Do you have a favorite movie that you could watch over and over again?
I have three: Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

If you could date any female character from any book, who would it be and why?
Wow. The first female character that comes to mind is Goldy Schulz, from Diane Mott Davidson's books. When she describes how she looks and gets herself in a tangle, I just fall in love with her and wish to be her husband and holding her and consoling her, even though she can't stay out of trouble. Her curiosity and self-deprecating humor, as well as devotion to her son and her catering career, just make her so real to me. *sighs*
