Today we have the pleasure of speaking with
Cindy K. Green. Hello
Cindy and welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews.
Hello Linda and all the Fallen Angel readers. I'm really excited about this interview.
Cindy, I notice on your webpage that you homeschool. Do you often find yourself learning along with the children new things? I bet it is exciting teaching at home.
Well, I was a teacher before I started to homeschool - middle school. In fact, I'd taught just about every subject except for science. I think what I have really learned while being a homeschooler is different ways to teach which aren't embraced in traditional schooling. If I ever get back into the regular classroom, I will emulate these facets of education.
You have some fascinating books out. They always reach out and touch the reader. Which one would you like to discuss with us today?
I have several novellas and short stories published but only one full-length novel right now. That novel is A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Your Wedding. I have been absolutely surprised at the reaction this book has received from reviewers and readers. I've received so many comments and email messages about how the story has touched and moved them. It is an Inspirational story and it made me realize what a responsibility we authors have in the way our stories touch the lives of our readers.
This book began as a writing assignment in a Romance writer's workshop. Our heroine was supposed to meet the hero and ask for directions. What I wrote then is basically the first part of chapter one - through much editing. A Funny Thing… is essentially a story about forgiveness and healing with a smathering of humor thrown in. I love to include humor in my books. Oh, yes, and a yummy youth pastor. Can't forget that! I've been asked to write a sequel of this story and I may one day.
Do you enjoy writing stories in anthologies?
When I first began to seriously write, it was always as a novelist. I never even tried to write short. But my very first published work was a novella about 23,000 words. I have found that I really do enjoy writing the small stories and being involved with anthologies. It is a completely separate art form: writing short. You take one moment in time and bring it to life, ending with the Happily Ever After we all crave.
Of all your works, which to you consider your greatest book you have written?
Honestly, I think my best is still to come. I have a historical in the works that is coming together beautifully. I love the plot, the characters, the depth, the flow of the words. Up to this point, I would say my greatest is A Funny Thing as I was able to get deeper with that story than any other thus far. But The Spirit of Christmas did receive an award nomination too.
Who do you think are your greatest and strongest characters?
I always say that Kathryn Graham from my first book, The Spirit of Christmas, is my favorite. She is a strong, go-getter with a soft heart she keeps hidden from the world. In essence, she is my version of Lois Lane. I am a big Superman fan.
I just finished writing the sequel in my NovelTea series, NovelTea Next Door. This one was written in first person from the perspective of the secret agent hero, Grant. I love this character. He is powerful, humorous, cocky, with a painful history and so in love with the heroine. Love it! This is what I call - light suspense and romantic comedy combined.
What does the start of the New Year hold for
Cindy in upcoming works?
I have a novella releasing with By Grace Publishing in May called Meeting Mr. Right On-line. This is my first stab into writing Chick-lit. It's hilarious.
NovelTea Next Door will also release in 2008 as well as a short inspirational story and a short historical with The Wild Rose Press. I am in the process of finishing a couple full length novels too. So, we will just see.
What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Persistent, Empathetic, Humorous
How long did it take to find the right publisher for your works?
When I began to write, it was never with the intention of being published. My sister finally talked me into sending out the manuscript of my first completed novel to several publishers. It was at this same time that I met Rebecca Goings who told me about By Grace Publishing. I noticed they were in need of Christmas stories (this was July 2006). I decided I could write a Christmas novella. I wrote The Spirit of Christmas in six days, submitted it and they offered me a contract. After receiving a couple rejections on A Funny Thing, I sent it over to The Wild Rose Press and in about a month I was offered my second contract. It just has been rolling onward ever since.
How do you keep your ideas fresh and imaginative?
I read a lot not just modern written books and stories but lots of classic literature. I observe people and things all around me and I love watching romantic comedies. These things always seem to impress on me inspiration that comes out in my writing.
If you could be a character in any Disney Movie, which movie would you choose?
After much consideration, I believe I would be Belle from Beauty & the Beast. Who doesn't like a brooding hero who turns out to be a handsome prince?
Do you ever make New Years Resolutions or just brush that thought aside?
No, I never really make resolutions. I do try to refresh things in the New Year. Remove the things pulling me down so I can be more productive. Get more organized. Things like that but not any particular resolutions.
Have you ever completely finished one book then suddenly decided you wanted to change the ending?
In NovelTea Next Door, I did go between two endings. I had to decide whether to kill off my villain or not. Readers will have to read it to find out which option I chose. I have never finished a book and gone and completely rewritten the ending. I have had endings change from my first plotting to actual writing.
Do you have a favorite pair of shoes that you cannot do without?
I do love shoes…oh, and coats - coats are my real fetish. I have a pair of black high heel strappies which make me feel very glamorous. I also love my Vans.
Which do you think is more romantic, a walk in the country or along the beach?
Oooh, they both sound wonderful. I grew up in Orange County, California. We now live out in the country in North Carolina but I miss all those walks on the beach.
You are on a picnic, which do you go for first, hot dog or hamburgers?
Oooh again, love them both! Probably the hamburger but I'll have a couple hot dogs later.
