Nalini Singh Interview

I am delighted to be speaking with author Nalini Singh today. Thanks for chatting with me today Nalini!
Thanks for inviting me!

To start, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?
Well, I live in New Zealand, I'm addicted to chocolate and I have a bad case of wanderlust. There are so many places I want to travel and see!

Talin and Clay are the two fantastic characters in Mine to Possess, can you tell us a little more about them?
I flat out adore these two. Clay and Talin (or Tally as Clay calls her - when he's not mad at her that is), were childhood friends before a terrible event ripped them apart. Now, as adults, they have to fight the ghosts of the past to reach each other.

It's going to be a hard battle. Clay is still so damn mad at Tally, and as for Tally, she's hiding some very dangerous secrets. But I tell you - when these two get together, sparks fly. MtP is very emotionally intense, a love story in the truest sense. I cried when I wrote certain parts of it and I still cry when I read those bits - Clay and Tally's story touches me each time.

I am seriously intrigued by the duality that is becoming more and more apparent in the Psy in each book. Will this division and change become more and more of a focus in books to come?
It's definitely a theme that will continue, but in the forthcoming books, we're also going to be seeing more of the human perspective. I try to think that each book adds to the richness of the world, layers upon layers, threads tangling together.

The Psy/Changeling world is so unique and I must say addicting, where did the inspiration for it come from?
I find this such a tough question to answer. I've always been interested in psychic phenomena, so perhaps that played into it. All I know is that one day, I sat down and I had these two amazing characters telling me their story and I so desperately wanted to write it. I still feel that way about the world and its characters and it's a wonderful gift.

Can you tell us what else we can look forward to from the Psy/Changeling world?
February is Clay's book as you know, then in September, we have Dorian's book - Hostage to Pleasure. There's also going to be a novella titled "Stroke of Enticement" in October - I don't have the title of the novella collection yet.

With the Changelings and the Psy such large forces in your world, will we ever see a 'special' human? One that is neither Psy nor Changeling yet able to embrace their worlds as well as their own?
Hmm, I don't want to give away spoilers, but let's just say this is something I've begun to explore.

Of all the individuals you have created, do you have a particular favorite? What appeals to you the most about this character?
Oh, I can't pick! I love each and every one of them - for their flaws as much as their abilities. Each is unique and more importantly, each is perfect for their other half.

Which of your characters is most like you?
You know, I've never really thought about this. The characters are so real to me that I think of them as separate entities. Perhaps they have elements of me, but in the end, they are their own individual personalities.

What was the first story you ever wrote?
I've been writing a really long time, so I don't know if I can remember my very first story, but I can tell you the first full-length novel I finished. It was about a woman who winds up on a tropical island recovering from a broken leg, and falls in love with the handsome millionaire who also lives on the island. I am still so proud of that book, because it showed me I could write a complete novel.

Do you go back and read your own books for pleasure?
Funny you should ask this because I did that just the other day. I always try to write books I'd love to read, and so sometimes, I pick up my own books to reconnect with my characters, or just because. The book I picked up most recently was Desert Warrior, which was my first published book. Part of me was curious to see if the story would hold up to scrutiny after several years (which, I really thought it did), but mostly I just wanted to meet Tariq and his Jasmine again.

What is the one thing you've always wanted to do but never had the courage / opportunity to try?
I really want to parachute/skydive. I'm going to do it one of these days!!

If you could meet one of your characters, who would it be?
Tough, tough question. Can I say all of them? I'd just love to see how they all interacted.

What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating Mine to Possess?
So many different parts of the world opened up in this book, but one thing that really sticks out is a major change in terms of the cast of players. I didn't see that coming but when it happened, I knew it was exactly right. It fit with the organic nature of the world - it's constantly growing and developing.

You have 3 wishes, what are they?
1. That everyone I love is safe, well and happy.
2. That my books do stupendously well so I can keep doing this job I love.
3. That I can have three more wishes!! (Sorry, couldn't help myself *grin*)

Is there anything else you would like to add?
I just want to say a big thank you to all the readers who've made wish 2 come true for me - your support has been an amazing source of encouragement. Ito all the readers who've made wish 2 come true for me - your support has been an amazing source of encouragement. I hope you all continue to fall in love with the Psy/Changeling world!
