Cheryl Brooks Interview

Today we have the pleasure of speaking with Cheryl Brooks. Hello Cheryl and welcome to Fallen Angel Reviews. Why not take a seat and get comfortable and let readers learn a bit more about Cheryl.

Whew and wow, Cheryl, I just read Rogue: The Cat Star Chronicles, Book 3. It is indeed one sizzling story. Each of your characters have traits that reach out to the reader, I know they did to me. Would you like to discuss the book with us?
Sure! This story is about what happens when Kyra Aramis, a timid piano teacher from Earth, travels across the galaxy to teach piano to the daughter of a Darconian queen. She's not looking for love and is sure she won't find it on a planet populated by creatures who look like down-sized, snub-nosed versions of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. However, upon her arrival, the Queen introduces her to her favorite “pets”, two stunningly attractive feline male humanoids from the lost planet of Zetith. The guys have been the Queen's pampered pets for the past twenty years, but they haven't had any nooky in all that time. Kyra falls for Tychar almost on sight, but Trag is a sweetie, too, and if she doesn't help him out, he may never enjoy female companionship again for the rest of his life. What's a girl to do? Throw in a bit of political intrigue, a desperate battle against overwhelming odds, and some bizarre alien slaves, and you've got The Cat Star Chronicles: Rogue!

The way you wrote your characters I could feel their sensations practically jumping from the pages. Was it difficult composing scenes between the brothers and Kyra?
Not really. Once I have characters in mind, their dialogue and actions come very naturally to me. It's when those characters aren't clearly defined that I struggle with them. I've had some difficulty with my heroine in the sixth book in the series, which features Trag, one of the brothers from Rogue, and a female Zetithian. Her character was defined with respect to her background, but how it would affect her personality has been difficult to determine.

Do you dive right into your characters and become a part of the story?
That pretty much describes what happens. The story often unfolds for me just as it ultimately will for the reader. I start off with a general idea, and the characters take on a life of their own.

What inspires you to write?
The inspiration for this series was to create a race of aliens who should have been arrogant because of their sexual prowess, but are, instead, very warm, loving, and kind individuals. They have no wealth or power—most have been slaves—so they have only themselves to offer a woman.

What do you look for in a story?
Humor, a little adventure, very sexy men, strong heroines, plenty of romance, and relatively explicit sex. It always bugs me when a writer closes the door on the fun stuff!

How do you keep your ideas fresh and imaginative?
I have no idea! I just write what pops into my head. Sometimes it's good, and other times it needs more work, but mostly it's just my weird little brain doing its thing.

Growing up, did you ever keep a journal and write notes about the stories you would love to write?
Never did that. My father was one who could write a great letter, and he kept a journal. You could look through it and tell what he did and what the weather was like on any given day. I tried it once, but couldn't keep up with it.

How long did it take to find the right publisher for your works?
That's very difficult to answer because I've been writing, but not submitting, for many years. I began writing in earnest in 2004, but met with little success until I submitted Slave to Sourcebooks in 2007.

As a critical care nurse, you have a pretty busy schedule, what three words would you say describe you?
Usually tired, often bewildered, and frequently hungry.

Your good friends, Angela and Suzie, have decided to take you on a two week vacation trip with them, where do you think they will decide to go on the trip?
The Bahamas. Hear that girls?????

Would you like to share your website or myspace where readers can visit you?
My website is cherylbrooksonline.com, and my blog is cherylbrookserotic.blogspot.com. I also blog on casablancaauthors.blogspot.com and wickedlyromantic.blogspot.com, and I am on Facebook.

If you could look like one famous celebrity for one day, who would you choose and how would you spend your day?
I'd like to walk through a mall as Sandra Bullock and see if anyone notices.

I read you love to cook and often have annual cookouts. Don’t know if you are familiar with The Food Network, but if Bobby Flay were to challenge you to a throw-down, would you accept, and if, so, what would you prepare to win over the judges?
Bobby Flay, huh? Hmm, I prefer Tyler Florence, myself... I'd probably make hamburgers. My son always tells me mine are the best he's ever tasted.

Besides, the Eagles, what other person/persons, would you wish to play the guitar with in composing a song?
I love Maroon Five. Don't know if I could keep up with them—in fact, I'm sure I couldn't—but it would be fun!

Cheryl, thank you so much for sharing time with us today. I really enjoyed our interview. For those who have not checked out Cheryl’s books, you are indeed for a treat.
