Kiru Taye Interview

Today I have the pleasure of speaking with author Kiru Taye. Thanks for being here today Kiru!

To start, will you please tell us a little bit about your current release His Treasure, the first book in the Men of Valor series?
It's great to be here. Thank you for hosting me.

His Treasure is a historical romance novella set in pre-colonial West Africa. It's about a man who loves his wife unconditionally and would do anything to keep her; and a woman who is determined to make her own choices, though she'd been coerced to marry a man she knew little about.

In this story I wanted to write about an alpha hero who didn't bully his wife into submission by demanding his rights a husband but through consistent measured actions, won his wife over.

Here's the blurb:

In a time when men ruled their households with firm hands, can a quiet man tame his rebellious wife with persevering love?

Angry at being forced to marry a man not of her choosing, Adaku stubbornly shuns her new husband on their wedding night. However, she soon discovers there are worse things than giving in to a man whose touch awakens her deep desires. In a land where fruitfulness is celebrated, she could soon be labeled a barren woman.

Obinna knows there are several ways to tame a rebellious woman. Patience and perseverance are two of them. Adaku is his treasure and he will never let her go. When her fears push her into his arms, will he be able to convince her to stay with him forever by unleashing the passion within her?

As a newly published author, is there any advice you feel was instrumental in keeping you going?
When I first started writing seriously I read this piece of advice 'Write about what you love…write about what you know.' When I get distracted and off target I always refer back to those words. They are now my mantra.

Since you wrote His Treasure envisioning a series, did you do anything special to set up the future books?
The idea for a series didn't really come until I'd finished the first draft of His Treasure. But by then some of the secondary characters in the story started speaking loudly to me wanting to tell their own stories. That's how the series was born. The stories work well as stand-alone.

His Strength (Men of Valor, #2) out February 10, 2012, features two characters mentioned in His Treasure and His Princess (Men of Valor, #3) also features characters introduced briefly in Book 1.

What is the most challenging things for you as an author in creating and continuing on with a series?
For me the most challenging thing in writing the series has to be continuity and sequencing. In book 2, His Strength, some of the events happen concurrently to those in His Treasure. So I had to keep referring back to make sure that the sequencing was right. And I had to revise some parts of His Treasure to match some of the events in His Strength. And the same went for His Princess.

Was there any one person or event in your life that finally inspired you to sit down and write your first book?
I submitted the first chapter of the first book I wrote to the New Voices contest in September 2010 and it was shortlisted for callback by Harlequin M&B. They requested a partial submission. That spurred me on to finish the story.

Is it hard for you to balance your life as a writer? How do you manage it?
It is tough to balance writing with everything else in my life. Juggling other projects with a young family is tough. But it's meant I have room for little else at the moment. I've set goals for myself that I'm determined to meet. Writing is that important to me.

What is the one thing you've always wanted to do but never had the courage / opportunity to try?
I've done everything I've wanted to do so far. Life is way too short not to do the things you want to do. Next on my To-Do list: Write a bestselling novel!

Do you have a favorite movie that you could watch over and over again?
Pretty Woman
