Avril Ashton Interview

Today I have the pleasure of speaking with author Avril Ashton. Thanks for taking time to talk with me today Avril.

To start, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Thank you for having me. I'm a Caribbean transplant now living in Brooklyn, N.Y with my Spousal Equivalent and our 6 y/o daughter. I'm the eldest of eight children, the only one of them who drips into a faint at the thought-or smell-of books, and a recluse.

Can you tell readers a little bit about A Wicked Ride due to be released on February 1, 2011 from eXtasy Books?
Ah, A Wicked Ride. Now that was a pleasure to write. I kept getting freeze frames of different scenes in this story, but I ignored it since I was elbows deep in another project. Well, the h/h accosted me in a dark alley, quite frightening I must say, but all they wanted was for me to write their story. I said yes.

Master thief, Sasha Forde has left her procuring-as she calls it-days behind her, but a mobster's threats to her family and crew sends her right back to her old life. She's blackmailed into doing what she considers a simple B and E, but someone is way ahead of her, an enemy of her blackmailer, and he holds the very thing she's looking for in his tattooed hands. Best believe, Sasha's on his trail and she's got plans for him.

A Wicked Ride is the first book in the Wicked series. Can you tell us what you have planned for this series?
There are three more books in the Wicked series. The series is all about criminals, I didn't want to write straight-laced characters. LOL. I give them an outlet to voice the reasons for why they do what they do, and allow readers to tag along as they find love and acceptance. In the Wicked series you'll find thieves, hitmen, mob enforcers and all in between. You'll also find laughter, love and great sex :)

What are the most challenging things for you as an author in creating and continuing with a series?
Keeping it all straight in my head. I don't keep notes, all is written off the cuff, so keeping story lines straight are a bit of a hassle.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Writing off the cuff is my challenge, but I love it. I tried to do outlines and synopsis before a project…yeah…didn't take.

What is the most interesting thing you've done in the name of research?
I haven't had to do much research, but I did have to look up guns. I spent a great deal of time on the internet searching for guns, bullets range, guns for women/men. Efficiency and all that. Currently I'm looking up sex toys. Yeah…Lots of stuff out there.

If you could meet one of your characters, who would it be?
Sasha Forde, the heroine of A Wicked Ride, scares me. But she has such great taste in shoes and clothes, plus she's totally irreverent. I'd love to spend about an hour with her. No more than that.

If you could pick any celebrity to be on the cover of your book, who would it be and why?
Rapper Common was my inspiration for Niko, the hero of A Wicked Ride. He's acted in Smokin' Aces and Wanted, movies I watched while writing A Wicked Ride. He'd be soo ideal. Hmm

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?
Um, music. I can't write without it. It's like something is missing if I don't have music playing. Plus, I talk to myself and the characters-but then again, what author doesn't, eh?

When did you first consider yourself a writer?
When I sent the first chapter of my first completed novel to my online critique group. It didn't suck; some liked it, some didn't, but they all gave me tips on how to make it better. I received my crit with the most humungous grin.

If you had a warning label, what would it say?
Run, she's nuts!

What's the most interesting obscure fact you know?
None, and isn't that just the saddest thing?

Which one of the characters you've created is most like you?
Sasha Forde. We love fiercely, adore killer heels, and curse like the filthiest of sailors. Gotta love it :)

What can your fans look forward to in the next twelve months from you?
Hopefully more amazing stories. The rest of the Wicked series, although only book one has a release date so far. I've got a lot more projects in the works, and as I type I'm finalizing stuff. Blindfold Me, another novel of mine is contracted with Secret Cravings Publishing and will be released April 25. More news and updates can be found on my website, so keep checking.

Is there anything else you would like to add today?
I'd like to thank the readers for giving me a chance to share my dream with them. I hope you guys have as much fun with Sasha and Niko as I did :)

Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer some questions for us today Avril!
Thank you, it's been a pleasure for me.
