Today I'd like to welcome author Lalaina Knowles
to Fallen Angel Reviews. Thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions for us today Lalaina
Tell us about your latest novel Twisted Karma.
You are welcome and thanks for having me! The novel Twisted Karma is based loosely on my life, from an abusive marriage with my college sweetheart, my relationship with a professional athlete and events that occurred while I was going through a very difficult divorce in 2005 from my second husband. Initially, I released it as a novella in 2006 and that novella started as a journal; which was my way of dealing with everything that was happening until it was suggested to turn it into a book. This was a very difficult time for me; trying to raise my daughters, trying to hold onto a marriage that was obviously over and starting up a publishing company; my journal was my safe haven, my best friend so to speak. The response I have received from it has been mixed; I have had fans write me stating they admire my strength and I have had some write me about airing out my "dirty laundry" to the world but I feel at some point in life transparency is vital which is why I decided to release Twisted Karma as a novel; I get a lot of fan mail from readers wondering what happened to the characters in the book and I must say, "a lot"; and I am looking forward to ending the saga and giving my fans a story they will never forget.
When did you first start writing? What made you want to become a writer?
Becoming a writer was not intentional. I wrote and released my first book, A Wife of Abraham in 2001. In the late 90's, I began speaking to churches and small women's events and many found the material I was presenting helpful so I compiled all of my notes into a book and released it as a spiritual self-help book to help women that were hurting.
What satisfies you about your writing?
I am always satisfied with the end result after I read my book after the editing process. When I am reading it, I am eager to continue to hone my craft but on another note, I realize that I am a great writer.
In addition to being a best-selling author, you're also a Life/Relationship Coach and owner of LadyElle Publishing. Can you tell us what being a Life/Relationship Coach entails?
Sure, my job as a Life/Relationship Coach involves helping individuals and couples discover what they were born to do and then helping them do it. I am a change expert, professionally trained to help others maximize their potential by making life changes, using tools like values inventories, destiny-discovery exercises, personality assessments, support structures and action planning.
With so much going on is it hard for you to balance your life as a writer? How do you manage it?
Time management is essential and remaining focused is key. I am fortunate to be surrounded by likeminded people who understand my schedule and children who are young adults who have schedules of their own.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned while creating your books?
The most surprising thing I learned while created my books is that I am capable of tapping into my total inner being resulting in creating alter egos for my characters. Lacking this ability, considering by nature I am a very conservative person, would result in very boring books!
What were your feelings when your first story was accepted and when you first saw the cover of the finished product?
I went the route of self-publishing all of my title under my imprint so I didn't have to go through the traditional publishing process which was gratifying. I did however use a print on demand company that offered a service where they created my book cover with my input and I wasn't pleased; I learned that an eye catching book cover is vital to a book's success. I was most excited however; about the accomplishment of completing the book.
What can your fans look forward to in the next six months from you?
Well, Twisted Karma-The Novel will be released next month and I will be contributing to a few anthologies that will be released as well. I have a couple of other projects that are in the works that I have to remain hush about but, I can say to my fans that after a 5 year hiatus, I am back!
What book has influenced your life the most?
The Secret by Rhonda Byrne has had the most influence in my life. I have found that by applying the principles of those teachings to my everyday life as it relates to both personal and professional, has resulted in a more successful and most important, peaceful lifestyle.
What would you consider your most interesting quirk?
It would have to be my ability to remain happy even during the worse times.
If you had a warning label, what would it say?
Be careful how you treat people because what goes around comes around.
What is the one thing you've always wanted to do but never had the courage / opportunity to try?
Fortunately, I can say that everything I have really wanted to try, I have had the opportunity to try.
Of all things you have accomplished, is there one accomplishment you are most proud of?
My most proud accomplishment would have to be, raising my daughters who have evolved into three beautiful young women, in their own right.
What is the best advice that anyone ever gave you?
To never change who I am and if people cannot readily accept me for my true authentic self, then those people are not worthy of being in my life.
Do you have a website or blog where readers can learn more about you and your works?
