Progressions
Vanessa's life is not turning out like she had envisioned; her husband, children and even her cat have left her alone. Taking stock of her life, she is forced to face the irrefutable facts that her ex-husband had been a disappointment both sexually and emotionally, and her children are self-absorbed in their own concerns.
Caring and inquisitive friends and neighbors poke their collective noses in every aspect of her life and offer only questionable support with snidely inquisitive comments and self-help books. Taking a page from one of the books, Vanessa decides it is time for a change and takes matters into her own hands with a new hair color, new clothes and a new attitude. Fantasizing over a new place, and a possible "wild man," she takes off for Milford Sounds and her first holiday alone.
Vanessa meets Nigel, a charismatic and cocky vagabond, on her holiday excursion. He brings light back into her dismal life, showing her how to love again as he leads her through sexual exploration with vigorous intent, teaching her to be open and adventurous. When he follows her back to her home in Auckland, she discovers that there is another who has been craving her attentions. Her shop-mate, Henry, has been watching her transformation and soon makes his interest known. Two men, when she had thought she couldn't hold onto one, vying for her attentions and affection. Which will she choose?
Progressions is an inspiring story of a woman's realization that when one door closes another opens. Vanessa's emotional growth and her emerging knowledge that sex can be good and fun and satisfying will have you cheering her on. Judy Lawn shows us that there is life after tragedy that good can come from bad, and gives us hope. Her characters are well written and descriptive, jumping out to make their presence felt. This reviewer alternately wanted to smack them or cuddle them, depending on the situation, and found many of Vanessa's trials to be true to real life. Strength of character will prevail. I feel that you will enjoy this story long after you have finished it.
