Deadly Ties

The Kincaid family is revisited in Deadly Ties, the second installment of Jaycee Clark’s Deadly series. Gavin is an over worked doctor that doesn’t have time for the ‘dating game’. When he has a heated confrontation with social worker, Taylor, he isn’t thinking of bedding her, his thoughts are more towards strangling her. Gavin has yet another argument with Taylor, when he almost hits her because she’s standing in the middle of the road. When he realizes that Taylor and her son have been in an accident, Gavin forgets that he’d like to kill her. The doctor in him takes over and all three of them end up at his family’s home for the night.

Taylor is just trying to provide a stable, loving home for her son, Ryan; the child has not had an easy life. Taylor would like to say that everything was fine before Gavin came along, but that just isn’t true. Ryan’s birth mother is writing him threatening letters from prison, Taylor’s ex-husband is being a jerk about paying child support, and someone has broken in and thoroughly trashed their home. While all this is happening, the animosity that was there between her and Gavin has turned into something entirely different. With good reason Taylor can’t bring herself to trust anyone 100%. Gavin wants her, she has no doubt about that, but he isn’t the type of man who wants to be around for the long haul. Ryan has had enough people disappoint him and in Taylor’s opinion, she just can’t take the chance. This doesn’t sit well with Gavin. In the past Taylor would have been right, but with Taylor and Ryan, he wants to be a part of their family and for them to be a part of his. Somewhere along the way, when he wasn’t looking, Gavin fell in love with them both and he’ll do whatever he has to to convince Taylor of that.

Trouble is coming and Ryan can sense it. He’s terrified and he doesn’t know how to tell Taylor. Something really bad has already happened, but will they believe him? How can they take him at his word when he can’t explain how he knows? Trouble is coming and Taylor and Gavin might not be able to protect him this time.

Deadly Ties is just an all around amazing story. The suspense will have readers at the edge of their seat! Jaycee Clark has taken a very sensitive subject and realistically done the matter justice. There’s no sugarcoating the issue or glossing over it, as Ms. Clark describes the horrors of the abuse Ryan has suffered. Ryan was traumatized, and it brought tears to my eyes while reading a little boy‘s longing to be part of a loving family. Also captured expertly are the feelings and thoughts of those around Ryan. In the midst of dealing with an abused child plot, you have Gavin and Taylor‘s budding relationship. The coming together of this couple was great to read. They’re funny, loving and highly sensual. Although Deadly Ties is part of a series, it stands alone very well. My only problem was once I read Deadly Ties, I HAD to read Deadly Shadows. Kudos to Jaycee Clark! 5 Angels!
