Lieutenant Bran Fowler is a Rapier trooper, captured by the Trak-grub-wald enemy. He is thrown into a room with a civilian woman named Starling, and the Grub-wald forces them to have sex by threatening them with punishment from pain collars. That's the last Bran sees of Starling for several weeks, until he is rescued by his brother troopers. He will not leave the Grub-wald's planet until he finds out if Starling is still alive. After he rescues her, he discovers that she is pregnant, and cannot leave in the warp-driven trooper-ship (apparently, warp-drive is deadly to pregnant women). Not quite understanding why he feels compelled to save her, Bran takes one of the mechanized Zachs (similar to a tank) and attempts to hide on the planet with Starling.
Starling and Bran are an interesting pair of characters. Starling was kidnapped from her home by a slave-trader and sold to the Grub-wald for their human experiments. She is essentially an innocent in things sexual, in spite of the fact that she is pregnant. Bran is an enhanced human, an experienced soldier, whose only sexual experience has been with sex-bots provided by the military. He has no idea how to deal with a human woman. I really enjoyed watching these two "innocents" discover each other and their passion.
This is a 70-page short story, so the story clicks along quite fast, but nicely paced. The author's style is a little florid, but quite enjoyable. The ambience of this story is militaristic, since it takes place in a war zone, and there is some violence. However, this is primarily an erotic science fiction novel, with the emphasis on erotic. Bran and Starling can't keep their hands off each other. The sex scenes are very hot, including forced submission, voyeurism (by an alien species), oral sex, sex on a bench (does anyone do it on a bed anymore??), and a shower scene that just won't quit!Reviewed by: Jean
