The Nerd Who Loved Me
Lainie Terrell is a Las Vegas showgirl. Harry Ambrewster is an accountant. Like oil and water it is a combination that is just not meant to be. Or is it?
When Harry begins the evening babysitting for Lainie's four year old son, Dexter, he has no idea that he will end it by taking Lainie and Dexter to his mother's house to keep them safe from Lainie's ex-boyfriend, Dexter's father. Harry plans for the trip to his mother's to simply be a place for Lainie to make plans on how best to handle her violent ex who has suddenly decided, after a six month absence, that he wants to see his son. Once it becomes apparent that she has no one to turn to for help, he knows that he cannot let her leave alone.
Lainie hates being dependent on anyone but knows that if she is going to keep her son safe she must accept help from Harry and his unique "family". She senses the attraction between them but is sure that the reliable, normal man, who is quickly becoming a hero in her eyes, will not want to have any kind of relationship with a showgirl and her genius son.
I may be the only person in the world who did not read Ms. Thompson's first "nerd" book so I really had no idea what to expect from this book. It was great! The mixture of suspense, humor, sexual tension and pure sizzle makes this book a winner all the way around. The secondary characters are zany enough to be laugh out loud funny yet oddly realistic. Dexter is an absolute gem and the relationship between mother and son is so poignant and genuine that every mother will be able to relate.
I love a hunky alpha hero as much as the next red blooded American woman, but it's nice to see an "ordinary" guy get the girl because, let's face it, guys whether nerds or jocks, ARE "ordinary" until seen through the eyes of a woman in love and THEN they become a hero.
