Lairds of the Eagle

Laird Donan Glenncannon lost the use of his legs while fighting in the Crusades, but has worked hard to build as full a life as he can in his condition. He's learned to get around with the help of leg braces and a wheel chair, and even taught himself to ride a horse while strapped on. The only thing missing is female companionship.

On their way home from visiting their English holdings, Donan and his brother Shauncy stop at Granville Castle looking only for a safe night's rest. Instead, they find Lord Granville auctioning his stepsister Analise's virginity to a group of noblemen. Donan is stirred to his soul by the delicate beauty, but tries to ignore the desire she awakens in him. For Analise, it's love at first sight. When their eyes meet over the crowd, both of them feel a connection.

Not one to stand about and watch such depravity, Donan rescues Analise before the auction can be completed. At first, he plans to do nothing more than see her to safety. But when the weather turns bad and the pair finds shelter in a deserted cottage, he discovers it won't be easy. Analise makes it very clear that she is his for the taking.

While he has become as independent as possible, Donan still needs some assistance. He thinks that as Analise helps him, she will learn what life with a cripple is like and turn away from him. Although thought to be simple-minded, Analise is actually very perceptive. She realizes that how she handles the situation will determine whether Donan will ever be able to accept the idea that a woman would want him. Remarkably, she is able to make something Donan expects to be humiliating for him seem like nothing unusual.

Ms. Strom depicts the hardships and emotions of being paralyzed very eloquently. Although Donan never wallows in self pity, he is realistic. After being completely ignored by females for the past five years, he has given up any hope for love or physical affection. The mental journey he must make to accept the fact that he is man enough for Analise is wonderfully written.

Lairds of the Eagle is my first read from Allure Books. Based on the description on their website, I was only expecting erotica. I was pleasantly surprised to find a keeper medieval romance! The sex is hot, yes, but there is much more than that. This is a very tender story that deals with a man's sense of self after becoming handicapped and a woman's ability to see beyond that handicap to the honorable and very desirable hero underneath.

I highly recommend this touching and very erotic medieval romance. I definitely look forward to more from this author!!
