Going through the dark forest to gather medicinal herbs for her sick grandmother, Kira is cornered by wolves. The leader seems to speak to her telepathically. Just as she's about to be attacked, a large silver-maned wolf springs out and tells her to run.
Once safe back in the cottage, she tells her grandmother of the experience. Knowing death is near, her grandmother tells Kira of the family she never knew. She tells the young woman that it will soon be time her to embrace her heritage. Valgard, the silver wolf that saved Kira, instinctively knows Kira is destined to be his mate, but must convince her before he can claim her.
The Maiden and the Werewolf is one of the sweetest werewolf stories I've read. The author's vivid imagery makes the reader feel like they are in a cottage in a dark wood. The story was too short for much character development, but Valgard is an intriguing hero - not the usual alpha wolf, but not quite a beta either. He lets Kira know he wants her and will protect her with his life whether she agrees to be his mate or not. Kira was a little naïve at first, but her character's personality grew on me.
I recommend The Maiden and the Werewolf to fans of werewolf romance. It's a quick but very enjoyable read.
