Broken Promises

Rennie Wakefield has suffered mental, as well as physical, abuse from her husband, Phillip, for twelve years. When Phillip raises his hand to Kirsten, their daughter, Rennie knows she has to get away from him. Knowing Phillip will never grant a divorce, the only thing Rennie and Kirsten can do is leave while Phillip is out of town and pray that he never finds them.

Chase Taggert is the sheriff of the small town Castle Rock. Having never found the "right woman" to spend his life with, he has pretty much given up on settling down; until the new, mysterious woman and her daughter arrive in town. Instinctively Chase knows there is something that Rennie is hiding. Not taking "no" for an answer, Chase spends as much time as possible with Rennie and Kirsten. He hopes with time and understanding, Rennie will come out of her un-trusting shell.

After everything Rennie has been through the last twelve years, it is hard for her to put her trust in people…especially the good-looking sheriff. Chase tries everything to show Rennie that she can trust him. The more he is around Rennie and Kirsten, the more he comes to care for and love them. Rennie can never let Chase know she is married, so she can't allow herself to feel anything other than friendship for Chase. Can Rennie guard her heart as well as her secret? Can Chase break down her defenses and prove to Rennie she can trust him?

Broken Promises, Nancy Ann Rose's first book, is a compelling story. Ms. Rose pulls you into the lives of the characters, so you can't help but to care for them and in the case of Rennie and Kirsten…fear for them. This reviewer was awed at how much patience Chase has with Rennie. She's not very nice to him, yet his love for her and Kirsten allows him to remain patient and understanding.. Your heart breaks for Kirsten, who's wise beyond her years and Rennie because of the fear they have had to live in for so long. When they finally get away, their happiness is dulled because they still live in fear of being found by Phillip. This reviewer looks forward to more books by Nancy Ann Rose. Broken Promises is a keeper!
