A Long Shadow
Tyler Carson just doesn't fit in. The year is 1955, she has no children, she's not married but she has had an affair or two, and she actually works for a living. Tyler's not a conventional woman at all.
Grant has been running from his father's legacy for so long, he doesn't know how to go home again. Now he's left with no choice; his father's dead and he has his niece to care for. For Grant, being back home isn't all that different; mostly the townsfolk still compare him to his father. However, Grant's not looking forward to facing Tyler again.
Tyler and Grant can't seem to get past their misconceptions of each other. They still care about each other, they still want to be together; yet no matter what they do they end up pushing the other away. Grant knew he'd have to work hard to get back into Tyler's good graces. When he'd left her years before, there was no discussion he just left. The fear of more heartache and Grant's rejections forces Tyler to make a decision; for the first time in her life, she moves out on her own. She also quits the family business, the business that both her father and Grant's father owned. Grant feels horrible that Tyler has gone to such extremes because of him, but at the moment he has bigger problems.
Grant has decided he can no longer ignore the injustice of segregation. The Supreme Court ruling has come down and still the people in town refuse to allow the black children into the schools. Grant decides that to be a man, you have to stand for what you believe in, even if what you believe might cost you everything you hold dear. When all is said and done, will Grant still have Tyler or will he have lost her forever?
A Long Shadow is a thought-provoking story that readers will enjoy. The characters and the plot are multi-layered. It seems as if Barri Bryan has written all the characters as though they are on a self-discovery journey. The Civil Rights Movement was before my time, yet in reading A Long Shadow I feel as if I glimpsed a small portion of that time. I enjoyed this story because it made me think and at the same time the plot held me engrossed. This book isn't a warm and fuzzy romance; I imagine it's a very realistic representation of a time and situation that divided our country, but Grant and Tyler love each other and are trying to feel their way through unfamiliar emotions. I look forward to future works by Barri Bryan.
