Sleeping with the Enemy

Maggie Gallagher is as cynical as they come, but one look across a crowded dance floor has her changing her tune, at least temporarily. Maggie has a whirlwind, one-night stand with an extremely sexy man, Chris. For a short time he makes her forget that she's sworn off men for life, and remember just what it's like between a man and a woman. However, when the night is over, Maggie renews her no men policy. That is until the unthinkable happens. Suddenly she's a thirty-six year old woman with two teenagers and she's pregnant.

Chris is determined to get through Maggie's defenses. Knowing that she was hurt badly by her ex-husband gives him the patience he needs with her, but he has no intentions of letting Maggie keep her distance from him. At first, he'd been a little hurt when Maggie approached him with her 'business agreement'; he'd actually been thinking of settling down again and wasn't expecting that. He didn't intend to let Maggie have her way, but he wasn't going to make it easy for her either; she'd have to admit that she wanted him as much as he wanted her. Currently their lives were all in chaos. Chris and his own teenage son had led a fairly quite existence. Now there were two more teenagers, a dog the size of a horse, a lizard that constantly escapes and Maggie, his skittish wife.

Just when things were settling into a normal routine, Chris is accused of having an improper relationship with one of his students. Maggie isn't sure if she can be there for him, let alone believe him, when she has her on unresolved issues in this area. Chris can't really blame Maggie for being undecided. For all his talk about her not keeping him at a distance, he realizes that's exactly what he's done to her. Knowing how Maggie felt going into this marriage, he guarded his heart a little too closely from his wife. Now Chris can only wonder if they'll truly come together as husband and wife or will Maggie decide she was right all along; all men really can't be trusted?

Laurie Breton delivers an amazing story in Sleeping With the Enemy. With this story, the honeymoon is over before it even begins. Raising a family is precarious under the best of circumstances. Throw in a stepfamily, a late in life pregnancy and a list of insecurities a mile long and you've got a great book. Laurie Breton does an excellent job of describing Chris's attempt to get close to his step-kids without overstepping his bounds. Chris is determined to make this work, while keeping Maggie at bay. Maggie is convinced it will never work, while she's keeping Chris at bay. Will they ever work it out? It's obvious these two people love each other. It's even more obvious that each are determined to keep from being hurt. Sleeping With The Enemy works because Laurie Breton writes about real life and expertly at that. The book is funny too. The combination of humor, passion, family and love, results in a wonderful story that anyone who loves a good romance should read. Sleeping With the Enemy comes highly recommended!
