Tender Lightning: Tarot - The Magician

Dana Perrin is rushing to the airport on a deserted country road one dark and stormy night, when her car is almost struck by a bolt of lightning that flashes out of the sky in front of it. She has hit her head in the accident and her car is out of commission, so Dana begins the long walk to find help. Suddenly, a Gothic mansion appears out of nowhere--how did it get out here? In the hopes of finding assistance, Dana knocks on the door and is welcomed in by an old butler, who tells her that "the Master" is in mourning, but that she is welcome to stay the night. Dana promptly faints dead away.

When Dana comes to, she discovers that she has apparently stepped back in time to her favorite romance novel period, the 19th century, and that the Master of this house, a man named Franz Staresini, is a mystic who will not show himself to her. However, he gives instructions that she is to be allowed to stay and recover from her injuries in his mansion. As she begins to recuperate, she realizes that she can feel the ghostly presence of someone who she believes is her mysterious host. Can Dana solve the mystery and find true love?

The heroine's favorite type of books are the ones with the covers depicting the heroine looking back in fear as she flees the haunted mansion that looms on the hill above her. This story has that ominous Gothic, mysterious feeling; you just know that something bad is going to happen! This book's strong point is its very atmospheric ambiance surrounding a simple plot. The character of Dana is definitely a modern girl, and she attempts to take control of events as a modern woman would. However, the character of Franz is more difficult to understand and like. There are some very sensual heterosexual love scenes, but only a couple of those are modestly explicit. This short novel failed to really move me, but fans of Gothic romance should like it.
