The Measure of a Man
"His name was Walter, but they called him Crash because of the way he handled his wheelchair." Alison was a trainee at the company he worked for. Crash and Alison became friends-but could they become more than just friends?
I was quite impressed by this very short story (only 30 pages long). The opening line rivets your attention immediately, and you soon realize that this is not the typical romance. It's very unusual for a man in a wheelchair to be the hero in such stories, but it really works. The romance is shown developing between two people who like each other's company before any sexual contact is made. Both Crash and Alison are really admirable people, and they develop their relationship by actually communicating with each other, rather than assuming they know what the other thinks or feels. Although the erotic scenes are fairly explicit, they are also very considerate and gentle. The love scenes emphasize that lovemaking occurs mostly in the head, and that the affection and caring that goes along with such lovemaking is the most satisfying of all. I recommend this story for an interesting and quick read this summer.
