Beneath A Rising Moon is set in a contemporary alternative reality, where the shape shifters, wolves in this case, are accepted by the human race. Their numbers are kept down through fertility injections in the males. Ripple Creek Reservation is part of a remote small township.
Female wolves are being brutally slaughtered and a killer is on the loose. Wolf Ranger, Savannah Grant, is attacked and lies unconscious in a hospital bed. Her twin sister, Neva takes on Savannah's search for the culprit. Duncan Sinclair returns to his pack to find a murderer. Dance mates of the Sinclairs seem to be the target, so the authorities are investigating them. The pack has a wild, hedonistic reputation. Regular dance parties are held at the Sinclair mansion, which provide the wolves a venue for their sexual orgies. Neva's plan is to infiltrate the dance and the Sinclair pack, using Duncan as a cover. She quickly gets his attention by bathing naked in a fountain. Duncan realises that innocent Neva is using him but wants to know her motives. He binds Neva to himself for the moon cycle to keep a watch on her. Duncan does not know that Neva will not be the only one caught in the sexual spell. The next four days will change their lives forever.
Keri Arthur's Duncan is a jaded bad boy. He is tired of the chase and unable to get beyond the wild rebel reputation achieved during his misspent youth. The townsfolk know he has spent time in jail. Duncan has matured and takes his pack responsibilities seriously. He has no regrets because he believes that the past has made him the man he is today. Up until he meets Neva, Duncan has been aloof; rarely socialising even when his sexual urges rise with the moon. However wary he is of Neva, he cannot retain his icy facade. Her natural selflessness and outright sexiness thaw his frozen heart. Duncan has more than a feeling that she is his soul mate.
Neva is torn. She cannot deny the way Duncan makes her feel. He unleashes the wolf within that her parents had taught her to hold back. Although his outright demands infuriate Neva, she is worried that she will not want to let him go at the end of the moon cycle. Her strict father has threatened to cut Neva off from her family if she continues to see Duncan. For Neva, the loss of her twin may be too hard to bear.
An outstanding novel! From the sensual opening scenes, hot sex and chases through the snow; this reader could not put it down. Beneath The Rising Moon is extremely fast paced. Ms. Arthur's words flow rapidly, drawing the reader in page after page. The author intends to expand on this series and I can't wait for the next instalment. Especially recommended for followers of Susan Krinard and Laurell Hamilton.
