An attempt of gaining a peaceful pact goes awry so Malcolm and Kenneth must kill the Pict Earls to survive. The following night a bowman enters the new leader's chamber but is captured before the assassination. This bowman turns out to be Bethoc, a Pict princess seeking revenge for the deaths of her father and fiancé. Kenneth feels that she needs to be guarded or executed immediately. Malcolm marries Bethoc in a hand fasting to save her life. Unbeknown to Bethoc, Malcolm is a Selkie. His only desire is to return to the sea but he cannot as Kenneth has hidden his sealskin.

As they have been thrown together, both fight feelings of attraction, then love. Malcolm is drawn to Bethoc but he knows that they have no future together. Bethoc feels more than attraction for this gorgeous hunk, yet she senses his reluctance and is afraid to get close to him. Kenneth requests the pair safeguard the Stone Of Destiny, an ancient religious relic that is to be taken to Scone for his crowning ceremony. It is during this journey that their true feelings are put to the test. Caught in an ambush, Bethoc is seriously injured. Malcolm secretly regains his selkie skin and leaves her lying in a pool of blood. Malcolm knows her only hope rests on him returning to sea…Bethoc has been abandoned, as she lies dying…

Cornelia Amiri's story of ancient love and myth is enchanting. She presents Bethoc as a warrior with a strong case to seek vengeance. When she clashes with Malcolm her new feelings and desires are at odds with all that she knows. This reader also came to love Malcolm. Ms. Amiri has created a man who is strong, virile and attractive. Protective and willing to die for his woman and beliefs; he also has a mysterious element. The sex scenes sizzle!

I found Ms. Amiri's writing style a little choppy. I had to reread some parts to check I hadn't skipped over what had been left out. This story is excellent and well worth reading through these parts. Recommended!
