Circle Of Desire
Detective Ethan Morgan appears to be a cynical, know-it-all cop. He is in denial - the reality is that he is a shape shifter werewolf. This side of him is kept strictly controlled. As the moon increases and his wolfish urges to mate become too strong to resist, he slakes his lust on any available female. As Ethan can predict when this will happen, he figures that he can control his urges too. He wants only to be human and has not walked as a wolf since his youth.
Young children are missing. Ethan's niece is one of the missing and he will pay any price to get her back alive. The cops are making very little progress. They know that a pair of psychics, an old lady and her granddaughter are on the case, but are dismissed as whackos. After Ethan has a run in with the granddaughter, Katherine Tanner, when he is chasing a suspect, he needs to find out what the pair knows. Kat and her grandmother, Gwen are totally weird. The explanations that they give are unbelievable, even for a shape shifter. Ethan blames his increasing lust for Kat on the current phase of the moon. As much as he tries to focus on the case and his niece, the strong sexual drive is overtaking his rigid control. But he knows that any deep feelings are not possible. A wolf mates for life and that ended badly, years ago.
Kat is a shape shifting raven and an empathic. Her abilities include feeling the emotions of the dead. The suffering of the children during their hideous deaths while the soul-sucker stole their souls is all too tangible to Kat. She must stop it. Her grandmother, Gwen is able to scry and see some future events. She is essential if Kat is going to succeed. Kat is more than attracted to the outspoken, unbelieving Detective. She can feel the pain in his past, but the feelings of love that he is denying are as important to his well being as the werewolf heritage he also denies is. Kat tries hard not to become emotionally involved with Ethan. The moon lust sex is as vital to him as breathing and he says it means nothing. Kat can feel that there is more involved than his body, but he has locked his heart and thrown away the key.
Keri Arthur's alternate reality is very compelling. The storyline is actioned packed. Her prose is so natural; I very quickly became absorbed in this novel. Her characters are very lifelike. The bumbling behaviour of the cops is reminiscent of many TV dramas. Ethan is presented as a typical cop and a typical man. He is strong and protective when in the mood and absolutely refuses to trust his own feelings, even when they are obvious to everyone around him. Kat is able to battle vampires, zombies and other werewolves with ease, but has to let go with Ethan. Ms Arthur is a very impressive author. If you haven't caught up with one of her shape shifters yet, you are missing out on something special. Highly Recommended!
