Divided Loyalties
Trisha Braedon is devoted to her father, her job at thefamily owned hamburger joint, "The Burger Shack" and her school work. She is also determined to win the McClintock scholarship worth up to $10,000 which will go a long way towards her college education. Trisha is also determined not to take one dime from her mother who had divorced her father and moved East to take a high paying job. In order for her to go to college she needs that scholarship.
Jon Higheagle is a new senior with big plans for change. When he discovers that the school uses Styrofoam containers that are harmful to the environment he sets up demonstrations and protests. Nita, who happens to be Trisha's best friend and has a huge crush on Jon, jumps right in the middle of the action, pulling Trisha right in with her. To Trisha's amazement and Nita's horror it is not Nita who captures Jon's eye, it is Trisha! Now not only does Trisha have to decide what is right regarding the environmental issue: Jon or the school and local restaurants such as her father's that use Styrofoam containers, she also has to decide who she is willing to give up: Jon or Nita.
Divided Loyalties is a cute story about the trials of high school. Full of angst, humor, and teenage crushes, this is a "G" rated book without any steamy scenes to offend younger readers. Vikk Simmons has an amazing ability to make the reader care for these characters. Jon is passionate about his cause and is willing to face being expelled by the school principal. Luckily he has the looks and charisma to pull off his shenanigans without too much trouble. Trisha wants to stand up for her own values but is more reserved than Jon is. However she finds herself in Jon's mess, most of the time not of her own free will. Nita comes across as a spoiled brat who is used to getting "her man" and is prone to pout when things do not go her way.
This reviewer enjoyed reading Divided Loyalties. Underneath all of the drama, there is a moral to the story which is the environment. The polyethylene containers that are widely used are polluting the air. However, the story ended much too quickly. It seemed to this reviewer that right in the heat of the battle, the story was over. Not to give the ending away, this reviewer will just say that there are strings left untied. Overall, this is a wonderful afternoon read and is recommended for all readers of all ages.
