The Scarlet Shackle
How humiliating it was for young Julia, a daughter of the third house of Threthapians, to have been captured and placed in front of many men to be auctioned. How demoralizing it was for her to hear them call out prices, trying to see their faces as her price became higher and higher. One voice stuck out above the rest, a voice that would soon be her Master, and a man who had bought her for one thousand dollars.
He wasn't a God but he was good looking in his own way. He, Marcus, wanted Julia to call him My Lord. He placed a scarlet cuff on her, warning her of the severity of the punishment she would face if she tried to leave him. During an afternoon in town she is split apart from him. When returned he is angered and punishes her. Even after she faces his punishment she cannot deny the love in her heart for a man she feels hates her.
Scarlet Shackle is a short story about second chances and accepting fate. Marcus was a dark character, he showed no emotions, yet spoke a language that only Julia could appreciate and love. He was romantic in a non-romantic way yet, he is a very distinguished character. Julia is strong yet something about this man weakens her. While I would have liked to have been able to read more about these two it was well written and passionate.
