Aphrodite's Flame
Isole Frost has a secret. Her mortal father is working for the most evil Outcasts of them all, Hieronymous Black. Izzy doesn't know what to do or who to tell. Lucky for her though, Hieronymous has applied for re-assimilation, which means he's trying to mend his evil ways. Izzy works for the Protector's re-assimilation council, which means she has to put Hieronymous through a series of tests in order to prove that his motives are sincere. It doesn't hurt that Izzy is an empath and can read minds, so she knows that Hieronymous is really trying to turn good. Unfortunately, her assistant, Mordi Black, Hieronymous's Halfling son doesn't believe it. He knows there has to be a catch somewhere, and he just has to convince Izzy and the Protector's Inner Circle that Hieronymous is up to something.
Now, Izzy doesn't know what to believe. She's always been able to trust her feelings because she can read people's emotions, but Mordi seems so sure that Hieronymous is up to no good. Izzy and Mordi are deeply attracted to each other, but it seems like a bad idea to get together. Both are under a lot of pressure as Halflings to live up to the Protector reputation, especially Mordi who has until recently been just as bad as his father. Izzy is trying to prove herself to the other Protectors too, because she is related to Zephron, the most important Elder, who many people believe got Izzy her job. Their desires can't be controlled though and as they fall in love, they know they have to learn to trust each other in order to save not only the mortals they are sworn to protect, but also in order to save their own lives! Will Mordi and Izzy discover the secret invention Harold Frost and Hieronymous are working on, or will they be too late to save the day?
Aphrodite's Flame is the long-awaited story of bad-boy Mordi Black, and Julie Kenner makes it worth the wait. Full of action, adventure, romance, and humor, Aphrodite's Flame starts with a bang and doesn't stop until the very end. It's great to return to Kenner's world of Protectors, people with special powers who help save mortals. She creates very believable characters that do not seem out of place in the day to day grind of life. Mordi is the consummate bad-boy gone good, but many of his bad-boy ways remain as he woos Izzy with his desire to prove not only to his family but to the other Protectors that he has made a commitment to mortals to protect and care for them. As he catches traitors he learns that it's ok to trust others. Not only Izzy but his cousins Zoë and Hale, characters in Kenner's other Aphrodite novels. Aphrodite's Flame is not to be missed; it's an exciting combination of romance and adventure with a bit of exciting Greek and Roman mythology thrown in. If you pick up this book, you won't be disappointed.
