The Man Behind the Mask
Aspiring writer Dulcie Samples has traveled from L.A. to the kingdom of Gullandria for her best friend Princess Brit's wedding. During one of the many social events celebrating the impending royal marriage, she finds herself dancing in the arms of Brit's brother, Prince Valbrand. For Dulcie it is love at first sight.
Valbrand is also captivated by Dulcie during their brief dance, but has given up any hope of finding love. His face was horribly scarred in a raid on his Viking ship. Even if Dulcie could see past his scars, as heir to the throne, Valbrand is obligated to marry into royalty to carry on his father's dynasty.
Despite everyone around her opposing their relationship, Dulcie knows in her heart that she and Valbrand are destined for love. She sets out to convince him that they are meant to be together.
Written in first person alternating between the hero and the heroine, The Man Behind the Mask is a refreshing change of pace. It's a contemporary romance, but since the country and royal family of Gullandria are fictional, it feels like a fairy tale. Added to the love story is the mystery surrounding the brutal attack that left Valbrand disfigured and his crew members dead.
The Man Behind the Mask is closely related to Ms. Rimmer's Viking Brides trilogy. Although enough background is included to make this title stand alone, I'll definitely be reading the first three stories of the princesses of Gullandria and their handsome husbands!
