Matia of Ruza is a Battlemaid - a servant of the Maid of Light who has taken an oath of celibacy. After capturing a female spy, Kaska decides the spy should be sacrificed to the Dark One as part of her punishment. Matia is disturbed by how aroused she becomes watching Kaska bend the woman over the altar and mount her from behind. Later that day Kaska tells Matia of his longing to perform a similar ceremony with her. Although she desires it too, as a follower of the Light, Matia cannot go willingly.
The Dark One is a very erotic BDSM fantasy. Domination is a key theme, but it is written with a romantic emphasis by Ms. Michaels. The hero and heroine become important to each other before they become intimate and since they consider each other equals, the submissive partner never seems like a victim. Kaska doesn't come across as an arrogant soldier only out to get what he wants. He has the strength to take her by force, but wants Matia as a willing sacrifice. He genuinely admires and respects her, in addition to being attracted to her physically.
I enjoyed The Dark One and highly recommend it. Fans of domination stories will especially love it.
