Violet de Vie Donne has the magical touch. In her village, the plants are blooming and the women are bearing children. Prince Jovan de Tiernan meets Violet and decides she is the woman for him. Is Violet the successor to the throne? Can Empress Delphine be persuaded to step down?

Violet is an innocent and naïve girl who meets her Prince. Jovan is strong and intelligent which was surprising since his mother is such a dominant personality. These two share a sweet relationship. Violet's character progresses at a quick pace and she becomes quite strong by the end of the story. The erotic level is quite low but in keeping with the storyline. The dynastic ambitions of the Empress are the driving force of the storyline. The Empress is very well drawn and the reader can feel the evil emanating from her.

The reader's only quibble was the length of the book and the open ending to the Empress' fate. The Gift of Elan was a thoroughly entertaining tale with intrigue, magic and romance.
