Promises Linger

Asa MacIntyre has always dreamed of purchasing his own modest ranch, once he's saved enough money hiring out as gunslinger. The other part of his dream, that he's kept locked away, has been to marry a lady and raise some kids to inherit his ranch.

During his latest assignment he isn't looking for permanence or the chance to realize his dream, but when it smacks him in the face, in the form of Elizabeth Coyote, he sure isn't going to turn it down… even if the lady is, technically, already married.

Elizabeth has lived a hard and unsatisfactory life. She was a disappointment to her father because she wasn't a boy, and she never knew her mother because she was murdered when Elizabeth was small. Since then she has tried her best to live up to her father's expectations of her; first attempting to turn Elizabeth into a boy, having her do all the things boys do…failing that, and then making her fit his idea of the perfect lady by sending her off to a fancy finishing school. In her wish to please her father she finds herself in an untenable situation and attempts to rectify it by appealing to Asa MacIntyre.

What neither of them reckons on is falling in love and having to deal with their volatile and opposing personalities, and Asa's idea of marriage is not the same as Elly's father's belief of what marriage is supposed to be. Will they be able to work through their issues? Well, you'll just have to buy the book to find out. I can tell you it was a fantastic journey in discovering the outcome.

This tale is about two unlikely people thrown into a marriage. It is funny, entertaining and worth reading. Asa is a wonderful example of a hot, fun loving cowboy. Teaming him with Elly, who constantly fights her nature to be an independent and smart woman in a time where they were considered to be anomalies and outcasts, was truly hilarious, and was part of the charm of this story. This reviewer enjoyed many of the situations that these two found themselves in. A favorite is when they have to consummate the union… it made me bust a gut laughing.

Ms. McCarty teamed that humor with some seriously page-burning love scenes and heartwarmingly realistic circumstances in this time period. The icing on the cake for this reviewer was the struggle Elly has with her true nature and her desperate desire to do what her deceased father wished. All this comes together to create a truly touching and page-turning story. Between the hilarity and the scorching loves scenes, Ms. McCarty throws in deep issues of our acceptance of who we are even in the eyes of overwhelming judgments from others, which makes this story a sleeper hit in this reviewer's eyes. Get it …you'll love it!
