Moon in the Water

Chase Hardesty, a riverboat pilot, has been offered a chance to command and own a new ship, the Andromeda. However there is a catch to this proposition, he must marry Commodore James Rossiter's stepdaughter, Ann. Ann is pregnant and her stepfather wants to squelch any possibility of a scandal. Ann doesn't want to marry so she gets Chase to promise not to ask for her hand in marriage. Unfortunately Chase changes his mind once he lays eyes on the Andromeda. The marriage takes place and Chase assumes she will stay with her family while he makes a run up the river. However, he underestimates Ann's determination to get away from her family and she decides to join him on his boat.

Ann is a very strong girl. Although she has suffered in the past, she is trying to overcome it and build a future with Chase. While it wasn't a love match in the beginning, Chase is beginning to have feelings for her. During the voyage, these two begin a tentative friendship. Ann learns to trust Chase and even admire him. Chase is a hard working, loyal and honest man. His adopted father has raised him to be an honorable man. Ann and Chase are surrounded by strong secondary characters. They do not detract from Ann and Chase's story, but enhance it.

Ms. Grayson has written a charming and heartwarming tale. The setting of this book is very unique. The author had done her research and it shows in her writing. The descriptions are so thorough; it feels like the reader is there. Moon in the Water contains two of the most memorable lead characters this reviewer has come across in a very long time. They are extremely likable and well drawn. Chase and Ann come alive for the reader. The reader is pulled into this book from the first page and it keeps your attention until the last page. With sharp dialogue, wonderful pacing and unforgettable characters this reviewer says run don't walk to your local bookstore!
