Silverthorn

Laura Morgan is traveling to Silverthorn to see her cousin, Madeline. She hasn't seen Madeline since her marriage, but they kept in touch via letters. Laura was orphaned at a young age and lived with her aunt and uncle. Madeline came to live with them when she was 15. Madeline married Lord Braithfield of Silverthorn. Upon arriving at Silverthorn, she finds out that Madeline has died. Laura assumes the position of governess to the current Lord Braithfield's children. She is known as Anne and hides her connection to Madeline. Before long she is entangled in the lives of the residents of Silverthorn and her search for the truth regarding Madeline's death opens up old wounds.

Written in the first person, the reader watches the unfolding story from Laura's perspective. She is a sensible, intelligent and loyal girl. We watch her grow from child to woman. Justin, the current Lord Braithfield is an enigma. He appears stoic and unemotional. The deaths of his two wives don't seem to touch him on an emotional level. The budding romance between Laura and Justin is slow and steady. It is not until nearly the end do we get a sense of the deep emotional attachment Justin had for Laura. Ultimately, this is Laura's story and her investigation into Madeline's death as well as the demise of the other Lady Braithfields.

This was a beguiling tale of suspense and mystery. It was filled with twists and turns. The author captured the reader's interest from the start. The reader became engrossed in the story and couldn't wait to find out the answers to all the questions. If you enjoy gothic romances, you will love this one!
