Meant to Be
Meara O'Rourke has lived with the knowledge that she was adopted her entire life. At one point she met her birth mother, but she was disappointed with the outcome and was not given an opportunity to pursue a deeper relationship with her. However, years later, Meara receives a phone call that will change her life forever, and perhaps answer the questions that have haunted her for her entire life.
Meara's birth mother is dying and she has left everything she owns to Meara. Of course, there is more being left behind that just an old inn. Secrets and lies from the past seem to be as much a part of her birthright as the inn itself. A saving grace within the turmoil and intrigue of her mother's life is Fletcher Black. This attractive and mysterious man owns the other half of the inn. As Meara tries to capture the peace and solitude the inn offers, her heart flutters at the presence of Fletcher. Both of them have been hurt in the past, but sometimes friendship and caring come when you least expect it. With his help, can Meara unravel the mystery of her past? Once family secrets are revealed, can they move forward to create a future?
Meant to Be is a wonderful book! The story displays a depth of emotion and character that is truly refreshing. Edie Claire has taken the seemingly simple concept of a woman being reunited with her dying birth mother and added just the right amount of drama, humor, and intrigue to make the plot enjoyable and believable. The story is a joy to read, but this reader found the most enjoyment in the strength of the characters and their reactions to the drama unfolding around them. Ms. Claire has taken the time to develop and personalize the characters in her story. The pain and longing Meara displays is heart wrenching. The reader can feel the hurt she has kept buried. However, while she is coming to terms with the knowledge of her past, she is still able to consider others. Her compassion towards those around her makes her a truly unforgettable heroine. In the character Fletcher Black, Ms. Claire has portrayed a man that any woman would love to know. He is far from perfect, yet his personality compliments Meara's persona. Together they find a friendship and love that will be tested by all they must learn and face together. The main characters are joined by a cast of players that uniquely provide purpose within the context of the plot. Additionally, the secondary characters provide levity and insight to the main characters. Ms. Claire effectively captured my attention within the first pages of Meant to Be. She is an adept storyteller well worth the time investing to read.
