Lady Elinor's Escape
Lady Elinor Ashworth's aunt believes that she is a French spy…
Aunt Sarah is withholding all of her correspondence and keeps Lady Elinor completely isolated. Lady Elinor makes plans to escape to London where her deceased mother's former maid, Madame Latour is now a seamstress. When Aunt Sarah starts brandishing a loaded pistol and slaps Lady Elinor so hard that it bruises her face, it is obvious that her aunt is mad and she must flee immediately. Her plans go awry and she is stranded at the local inn. Fortunately a young barrister, Stephen Chaplin, who has a talent for finding damsels in distress, comes to her assistance with his own coach.
Lady Elinor does not reveal her own identity, merely leading her rescuer to believe that she is a seamstress. When Stephen sees the bruise, he thinks that she is running from an abusive husband and goes out of his way to help her get settled in London. Despite his misgivings due to the death of another lady love, he begins to fall in love with a woman who is beneath his station in life. Lady Elinor has also developed feelings for Stephen, but still cannot reveal who she really is because he would be bound to return her to deluded Aunt Sarah.
Linda McLaughlin presents the trials and tribulations of this rash Regency Miss in an endearing manner. Her characters are very likable and I loved the way Ms. McLaughlin leads Lady Elinor from one dilemma into the next. The story is fairly accurate to this period - maybe Lady Elinor should have been chaperoned more often, but I'm sure Regency readers will enjoy this one!
Linda McLaughlin also writes as Lyn O'Farrell.
