Skin Deep
Kirby Prescott is a ball-buster of a woman. She does not want any man to control her life or to make decisions for her. She hates watching her twin sister dote on her fiancé and hopes she never behaves like that around a man. Kirby has created her own cosmetics line and it is carried exclusively at many of San Francisco's boutiques. She has to do business in a man's world and Kirby doesn't like to be seen as weak or unable to compete. That's why she adores her phone sex conversations with Jack Taylor, one of the product managers she dealt with for her cosmetics line. Little does Kirby realize that Jack has moved up from Product Manager to Vice President of sales for his company. He has never told her of his change in status because he wants to keep doing business with her rather than having some other product manager answer her inquiries and more.
Jack announces he is flying out to the west coast for the weekend, and he would like to go out to dinner with her. Truth be told, he'd love to do more than go out to dinner with her, but he's willing to take it slow if that's what Kirby wants. Jack is opening a new sales office in San Francisco, so he's hopeful that Kirby will want to take their phone sex relationship to a whole new level, not only physically but emotionally.
Kirby gets a big surprise when Jack shows up at her door. He's not Mr. Tall-Dark-and-Handsome; instead, he's short and balding, though he has an excellent physique. Kirby is shocked and though she doesn't want to think of herself as snobby and vain, she wasn't expecting Jack to be so ordinary, especially when the orgasms he gave her over the phone were extraordinary. Jack isn't concerned though, he sets out to prove that appearances are only skin deep and that he is more than able to satisfy her sexually despite her misgivings.
This was a great story; Kirby was a vulnerable woman hiding behind a tough façade in order to try to make it without a man. Jack is so in love with Kirby and he is willing to do anything to make Kirby realize that starting a relationship and falling in love doesn't mean having to lose one's identity and individualism. Skin Deep proves how appearances can be deceiving and Jasmine Haynes shows how love can conquer even the most physically mismatched people. Skin Deep is not to be missed. Jack and Kirby prove that looks do not matter when it comes to matters of the heart, and this is a lesson often forgotten in romance novels I think. It was nice to see Kirby's acceptance of Jack despite her initial misgivings. She fell in love with him because of his strong personality and his ability to stand up to her, not because he fit a certain image. This was a great story that really plays with the concept of appearance and image.
