When I was first approached to do a genre of the month on futuristics, I shuddered. Though an avid reader, I am no expert on this genre by any means. Where did one start to see the trends, the best sellers, the points of interest?
Finally, after much searching I think I found the best place to start.
Richard Matheson has been called "One of the most important writers of the 20th century". His work on the
Twilight Zone and The Incredible Shrinking Man has heralded him as an all time great in the fantasy/futuristic genres. He was one of the first authors in mass media to blend a little romance into the fray.
Now that we have entered the 21st century and technology advances daily, we have grown accustomed to the concepts and realities presented to many of us in cartoons first,
The Jetsons and so on. The media, just this past year entertained us with
I-Robot a wicked look at how things could go terribly wrong. On the other side of the same argument
A.I. tore at our heartstrings from the robot's POV.
Alien VS Predator and all of the movies in both series gave us glimpses of past, present and future conflict and of course the classic mind-boggler of
12 Monkeys.
Susan Grant has seamlessly woven the ideas and values of a dominant society into her futurist writing. The loose ends we all asked about in The Legend of Bansai Maguire, a huge hit, will be wrapped up in The Scarlet Empress coming soon to
Dorchester.
PC Cast's () acclaimed Goddess series captured the hearts and imagination of readers everywhere. Goddess By Mistake is being re-released by
LUNA in mass market paperback in the fall of 2005. Along similar lines,
Shana Abe acclaimed author of The Secret Swan now has The Last Mermaid available.
Teresa Medeiros has charmed readers for years with all fourteen of her books going to the bestsellers lists! She currently has over five (that is 5) million books in print.
Patti O'Shea,
Susan Krinard,
Sandra Hill,
Mercedes Lackey - These authors are rocking out world all the way into the future.
If you have not considered jumping headlong into fantastic futuristics take a moment to take a look at some of these authors…they'll blow your mind!
