Act of Betrayal

A perceived act of betrayal sets Maggie Graves’ life on a course that even she could not have foreseen.

Maggie Graves is a fighter. She has spent the last ten years of her life as an agent for BSI. However, when a charge of treason is levied against her, not only is she forced to run from the agency that was once her life, but when she is done running her life is never the same. When the agents of BSI believe in her innocence and bring her back into the fold, her trust and confidence in those around her is shaken. Maggie is a modern woman warrior that can take on any enemy, yet for all her strength as an agent, she doubts her own worth as a friend and lover. Instead of going after her heart’s desire, she runs in fear.

Act of Betrayal takes readers on a journey through Maggie’s eyes as she learns to cope with herself as a woman, not just an agent. She must confront not only her strengths but also her weaknesses. Maggie is not perfect and at times she is not even likeable, but she is a woman that endures and keeps learning.

Anna Parrish has done a credible job building the unique shades of gray that have been Maggie’s existence for ten years. Maggie’s journey to discovery takes her to various places, people and situations that lend insight into her character as a whole. The supporting characters of O’Brien and Hall allow an outlet for the reader to see not only her professional aptitude, but also the underlying desires of a woman. Maggie wants to be loved, but her battle to trust someone is at constant odds with her heart. The relationship that Maggie develops with the various children in the story contributes an added dimension to her character. She acknowledges that she is capable of love, and through the children readers are able to see why she is afraid to love. This romantic suspense is not a quick mystery to wile away the hours. Instead Ms. Parrish has created an involved plot that span the course of years, and focuses predominately on Maggie and how she becomes the woman she is truly destined to be. The ending is more than fitting for a character that has endured so much pain. 3 Angels.
