The Christmas House
When a modern day female scrooge cannot stand the idea of Christmas and all the fuss that comes with this special day, three Christmas Elves appear and take her on a magical journey. They show her things that change the way she thinks about one of the most important holidays of the year…Christmas.
Jaime McKoy uses rhyme, poetry, and humor to breathe new life into the classic story, A Christmas Carol. By portraying Scrooge as a female, Ms. McKoy gives the “Bah-humbug” character a delightful new spin. Seeing Christmas through the eyes of a woman is quite different than that of a man and Ms. McKoy brings forth these different thoughts and feelings quite effectively.
This reviewer read The Christmas House with her daughters, ages seven and nine. They giggled and smiled throughout the delightful story. They thought it was very cool that it was a woman who was the scrooge, and that in the end, she learns the true meaning of Christmas. The only thing they would have liked to see was more pictures of children that related to Christmas and that the pictures showed parts of the story instead of just being pretty to look at. This reviewer could relate to the female character in so many ways. We all are stressed out during the holidays and have similar thoughts as the main character during this time of year.
The Christmas House’s singsong rhythmic flow and fast-paced story will surely keep children and parents alike entertained. Since it is set in the present time, the readers will find it easy to follow along with and completely believable. This reviewer would surely enjoy future stories written by Jaime McKoy, as her quirky sense of humor shines through, saving the spirit of Christmas and delivering it to her young readers wrapped up in a big bow of self-discovery. This heartfelt story would be a wonderful gift for anyone who loves to read.
