Convicted

The last person Lisa Shadd expected to see when she put down her menu was Deacon Campbell. Lisa hasn’t seen Deacon in the three years since her testimony put him in jail. In a small town like St. Mary’s, Lisa was sure she would run into Deacon again when he got out of jail. Lisa just wasn’t expecting to meet him under these circumstances; in a restaurant with her boyfriend and sister, Terry and Allegra…and Deacon as their waiter.

Lisa is still consumed with guilt over what she has done to Deacon’s life. She told the truth, but it didn’t lessen the guilt she had. How can she be so wrong about a man she was half in love with, and ready to take that next step with; making love? She knows what she saw that night with her own eyes, so why can’t she convince her heart? Deacon was surprised to see Lisa. He expected to, some day. Deacon just didn’t think it’d be like this. Deacon also didn’t expect the feelings seeing her again had caused. He didn’t care for the fact that she was dating the cop that arrested him three years ago. Deacon had unanswered questions though. Questions he wanted, and very much needed, answers to. Why didn’t Lisa trust him enough to believe him? Did she honestly believe in her heart that he was guilty?

Deacon wasn’t expecting the phone call from Doug Shadd, Lisa’s father. Even more shocking was the reason he called Deacon; a job offer. Working with the ground, being able to grow things was Deacon’s dream. It was what he loved to do, and now he was given the chance to do just that by working at The Garden Shadd. He just doesn’t know how he and Lisa are going to handle working at the same place.

Lisa notices that, little by little, her personal things end up missing. At first she thinks her sister, Allegra, is borrowing them. Then she doesn’t know what to think when she starts receiving ‘ugly’ phone calls. Lisa is so confused. What is going on? Why would someone do this to her? Allegra, Terry and Lisa’s parents are ready, and willing, to blame Deacon for everything that’s happening to Lisa. After all, he is an ex-convict. Wouldn’t he want revenge on the one that sent him to jail for three years? In her heart, Lisa doesn’t believe Deacon is responsible, but the doubts in her head are there. Can they get past this? Can they get to the truth of what happened three years ago, and what’s happening now, and trust one another again?

Megan Hart weaves a tale so intense that you don’t want the book to end! The characters in Convicted are so believable you find yourself wondering how you, would react in the same situation. Not many authors can pull that off, but Megan Hart sure did with Convicted! This is the first story this reviewer has read by Megan Hart, and it definitely won’t be the last.
