Love Remembered
Gwaltney Harris was saved by his older sister from a house
fire that almost killed him. Since then, being indoors only made him
frightened, as if the walls were closing in on him. Years later, he left
the Williamsburg area to become a long hunter out west making his
fortune. He returned to Virginia after news of his sister’s death and
took in her daughter, Mary. He blamed himself for not being there to
protect her from an abusive husband. It only added to the ghosts that
plagued him all his life. Being back at the lowly origins of his birth,
even though his fortune was vast, he had no respect among the
Williamsburg society he was an outcast.
Cordelia was in her
twenty third year and was determined to never marry. She hid her beauty
behind spectacles, dowdy gowns and a shrewish tongue. When Gwaltney
announced his intentions to court her, she lashed out at him like a
viper. Obviously, he was only interested in advancing his social
standing through a marriage to her, and she did everything in her power
to have him hate her. Instead, they are caught in an unexpected heated
embrace by her father and forced to wed.
They agree to make this
a marriage in name only however she became lonelier in her new life.
When she overheard Jonathan, the fiancé to her sister, Elizabeth, talk
to Gwaltney about making a go of the marriage, she is appalled at his
responses. Her husband talked of her as if she was a mere possession and
promises to bed her soon like a common whore. From then on, she is set
to become the greatest of shrews. However, when repeated attempts on
Gwaltney’s life make him injured and vulnerable, she finds her feelings
are not so hard towards her handsome husband. Who is trying to hurt
Gwaltney? Will he let Cordelia ever show her true feelings? Can Gwaltney
come to the realization that love can exist?
Love
Remembered is an entertaining historical romp in pre-Revolutionary
America. Intriguing characters and electric chemistry make this one book
hard to put down. In fact, this reviewer stayed up most of the night to
just read it. Well worth losing some sleep over. Gwaltney and Cordelia
are perfectly matched, but are too stubborn to admit to any tender
feelings. This twist to the Shakespeare play Taming of the Shrew is
highly entertaining. Then, when mysterious attempts are made against
Gwaltney and his family, the list of suspects grows with each page turn.
As a fellow reader, you cannot help being swept into the mystery and
romance of this wonderful book. Ellen Fisher has written a real
winner and this reviewer will keep a close watch on her career
especially since Love Remembered is the start to a bright future
in romance.
