Poison In Paradise

Mari Bailey’s Poison in Paradise lives up to its title. While the novel’s Hawaiian setting connotes all sweetness and sex, Ms. Bailey takes the lush backdrop and turns it upside down without sacrificing its colorful allure. TV producer Jenna Morley arrives in Hilo to work on a project involving the volcano goddess Pele at the request of her friend Laura. From the moment Laura’s friend, "DJ" undercover cop Matt Kraemer picks Jenna up at the airport, appearances are deceptive. Matt is extraordinarily good-looking and always seems to turn up at crucial moments, such as when Laura unexpectedly faints at a restaurant.

Laura’s boyfriend Dennis was murdered and the case remains unsolved. She counsels her friend over the tragedy, and uses her avocation, hypnotherapy, to unearth clues that may solve the case. Poison in Paradise works well as a romantic suspense with hints of the supernatural.

The murder mystery is front and center here and it ultimately ensnares Jenna. The heroine is a strong character, loyal to her friend Laura despite past betrayals and slightly wary of Matt even though she is attracted to him. Laura’s friend and hairdresser, Tony, is a likeable secondary character who may hold the key to unraveling the murder mystery. A trio of older native women-Tutu, Pearl and Bea-add vividness and authenticity as “Pele’s” story unfolds, leading us into the mind-set of Hawaiians who staunchly uphold the island’s legends.

A well-plotted and picturesque romance, Poison in Paradise doubles as a recommended read for suspense fans.
