Fever
Fever is the compilation of the stories of several
individuals who all influence each others lives. First we meet Tim and
Nina, a couple who fall in love and get married. Nina leaves her career
and life back in NYC to live out in California with Tim, a film
producer. Down the line, she feels trapped in a loveless marriage, or so
it seemed. She wonders if she can ever recapture the spark in her
marriage, that is, if Tim even glances at her from his refrigerator
raids. What will it take for her to keep her husband that she loves so
dearly? When she plans a surprise picnic lunch at his office, she ends
up being the one surprised –Tim with his ex-girlfriend sitting on his
lap. Can this marriage be saved?
Next, we meet Carla and Sam, a
married couple with lots of deep seeded problems. Carla hasn’t given her
husband any attention in the bedroom for so long, and Sam is growing
frustrated. Each time he tries to get near her, she panics. Why does she
act that way? Carla holds a dark secret that eats at her soul, and it is
costing her husband and daughter. When Sam suggests she seek therapy,
she refuses. Things only get worse when Carla starts taking out her
frustrations at work. Can she find some sort of peace to save her own
sanity? What about Sam? What keeps him with Carla through all of
this?
Troi is Carla’s best friend and Nina’s sister. She is the
rock to which all rely with their secrets and troubles. She helps them
through despite her own problems with a teenage daughter and a forbidden
attraction to Sam, Carla’s husband.
I really enjoyed this book
of people facing real problems that life sometimes presents. Each handle
the situation the best they can. And they all find help through Troi,
the strong female character in the book. She is by far the most
admirable character. She not only fights her secret desire to love Sam
because doing so would hurt her best friend, but she also stood by her
own husband as he lay dying of HIV. There was a wonderful question she
asks Nina which sums up the entire book, “...do you conquer your demons
or do you let them conquer you?”
Fever is a wonderful
entertaining tale, one you must have plenty of time to read through in
one sitting. Yes, the story is so engrossing, you won’t want to put it
down. The characters are all well developed and interact well together.
A few surprises are in store for readers along the way as they get a
glimpse into the lives of these people. Readers will keep asking
themselves, who will end up together, and who will have to go on alone?
