In the introduction to Darkness Bound: Beyond Bondage & Discipline, author Raven Kaldera issues a warning to the faint of heart. He is a "multiple axis offender." The stories contained in Darkness Unbound confirm that statement, but they also reveal a powerful and original writer.
Kaldera writes of bisexual, gay, and lesbian characters with a faint mention of vanilla hetro sex here and there. Jack-A-Roe, the collection's first story details pagan hijinx in the Big City, while Hands of a Dark God deals with BDSM as an onstage ritual and spiritual release. The characters in Kaldera's stories are as unrelenting as his prose; even the "submissives" (such as Deseret the student in Flying Dreams) are tough customers. The story settings vary from the virtual reality gone astray of Thief of Dreams and the ancient Roman backdrop of Gallae. Darkness Bound is an uncomfortable ride, but certainly one worth taking if you are an adventurous type.
A word to the wise-although I enjoyed this collection, there were some extreme BDSM passages that made me queasy.
