The Awakening: Book One of Destiny's Dreamer Trilogy

Jack Stryker has been searching all his life for the "Legend". While others ridiculed him and belittled his quest to find the woman responsible for uniting a universe, he never gave up on finding her. His quest is not purely for the scientific thrill of discovery; he wants to find the reality of the woman he has met in dreams his entire life.

Kaylith is a strong and unique woman. She was born out of the genetic experiments on her home world. All her life she has felt like a freak, she does not see the inherent beauty and amazing abilities that others see. During her lifetime, she always fought for what she believed in. Sometimes she succeeded and others times she failed, but through it all, she has always had Jack to come home to in dreams. Somehow as children, their minds met across space and time to offer comfort and support. As they grew up, they continued to offer unwavering support. When her ship is sabotaged and the crew left for dead, her mind is still alive; she is resigned to spending the rest of her life in dreams. As long as Jack joins her in dreams, it is not too bad an existence.

However, when he finally finds her ship, he awakens her. She is greeted by a world she no longer knows, but a world that knows of her. She comes to terms with the fact that her dream man is in fact a real life, breathing Terran that's mere presence excites her more than any dream. As Jack and Kaylith try to enjoy being together, evil forces conspire against them. They failed years ago against Kaylith, but they don't intend to fail again.

Rebecca Vinyard's writing was excellent. The story flowed well between Kaylith's experiences, the events in Jack's life leading up to his discovery, and the present they were both going through. I became engrossed in the story from the first moment when Jack is opening the stasis chambers to see if Kaylith is there. The emotion evident in his character was touching and when paired with the feelings and thoughts of Kaylith, I couldn't put the book down for fear I would miss something. As the reader is experiencing what has led up to the present moment, they can't help but feel a growing sense of urgency. Something is out there in space, just waiting and planning. Will they be able to defeat the enemies of the past? Are there new enemies just waiting to come forward as the history of the universe is rewritten? This reader can only hope that there will be many more chapters in Jack and Kaylith's story.
