All That Glitters

Rich kid Kevin Sutherland plays minor leauge baseball, falls in love with a poor girl, marries her and gets her pregnant all before rich bitch Mom, Angelica, can stop him. When he returns home to Rochester, New York with his new family in tow, Angelica punishes him by giving him a low-level job at the family plastics factory. When Kevin dies in an on the job accident, wife Julie turns down Angelica's meager monetary settlement and ultimatum to leave the city immediately.

Tom Marr, engaged to Angelica's equally bitchy daughter Darcy, is sent to intercede and ask Julie to leave. But the assignment backfires on the Sutherland matron. Tom's empathy for Julie turns to attraction and his feelings set off a chain reaction that changes everyone's lives forever.

All That Glitters is a mainstream contemporary romance that features familiar characters. There's Julie, the wrongly hated sweet, poor girl who just happened to fall in love with the wrong man and get in the way of the rich family's plans; Tom, the family's confidante and surrogate son; Angelica the family's icy, cold matriarch; and her weak-willed husband Richard. Her copycat daughter Darcy is Thomas' fiancée, and her disdain for Julie matches her mother's.

Thomas confesses his desire to Julie and the aftermath causes repercussions for everyone, including Julie's children. Eventually, Thomas makes a decision that frees them from the Sutherland curse for good. All That Glitters weaves a popular storyline, the poor girl vs. the rich bitch, with rich women Darcy and Angelica being especially heartless and easy to root against. The Sutherland women never stray from the Joan Collins in Dynasty cloth. Tom and Julie get their revenge slowly but surely, as their adversaries' blatant schemes contribute to their own undoing. All That Glitters is tightly written and moves along briskly, with its Rochester, N.Y. setting firmly portrayed.
