Princess Esmeralda of Snowwhere doesn't want to marry Prince Arnulf. After all, he's her Grandfather's age. After having an argument with her parents about her upcoming nuptials, she recklessly rides off alone into the surrounding countryside. No sooner is she in the wooded area when she is attacked by outlaws. However, the Black Knight comes to her rescue. For saving her life, the Princess grants the Knight anything he desires as a reward.
The next night at the Princess' masked birthday ball, a man dressed as a begger asks her for a dance and she accepts. There is something about the man that reminds her of The Black Knight. When the begger then asks the Princess to step outside alone, she follows and is soon caught by her parents in a very compromising position.
Thrown into marriage that very night with Prince Arnulf, Esmeralda longs for her Black Knight. However, will he show himself and save her? On the other hand, will she be forever wed to a man she does not love?
I enjoyed A Mysterious Knight very much. I liked the fact that Esmerelda fought against the arranged marriage to a man that she didn't love. And the Black Knight is the hero that love stories are made of. Ms. Verkerk writes these characters as if you are in their minds and watching the action happen through their eyes. I look forward to reading more by Ms. Verkerk in the future.
