Mistress of Death

Dria was being prepared for the ceremony that had been a part of her fate since before she was born. Their God is the Dragon, Ouroborous. In service to him, Dria had been chosen to become a Dark Priestess, yet before she can fulfill her destiny there were many trials to endure. Dria's virginity would be sacrificed to a priest in order to get her with child. When her child is born, she was not to raise it. Instead she was to consume its very soul. Her tasks would then be complete; she would a Dark Priestess, a 'thief of souls'.

As the ceremony commenced, the Raiders attacked. Several of the men were killed and many of the woman abducted, Dria included. The Raiders were warriors that fought against her way of life; they didn't believe in Ouroborous and battled to be free. It was soon clear that the Raiders didn't intend to murder them; they were looking for mates. Dria angers a Raider leader with her unrelenting belief in her God; she is to be executed.

When she is left tied to a tree, several of the Raiders attempt to rape her. Her original captor rescues her. She knows this man; he is Taran, a boy from her childhood. It was thought that he would have been a great leader for them, until he suddenly disappeared. He tells her that he has chosen her for his mate; he wants her for his own. Taran wants her to give up everything she has ever believed in, to turn her back on everything she has ever been taught. Even though she is drawn to him, can she put her trust and her faith into someone who opposes her entire way of life?

Jeya Jenson is a master at the written word. Even in a short story she weaves a tale that grabs you from the first page. Dria is trying to be strong in her beliefs, but she has fears and doubts that Jeya portrays expertly. Taran is a man who doesn't mind fighting; he just wants something, someone to fight for. Mistress of Death is an enchanting, quick read.
