The Mysterious Knight is one of New Concepts Publishing's 14 Days of Fairy Tales series. It is the very short story of Esmeralda, an immature young Princess who finds out she is to be married against her will. Her betrothed is not only elderly and physically unappealing, but also reputed to be despicable. After arguing with her parents, Esmeralda foolishly rides off into the forest alone.
Just as she is about to be attacked by marauding soldiers, Esmeralda is rescued by a handsome masked knight dressed in black. Grateful to him for saving her virtue, she offers him anything as a reward. Instead of the monetary gift Esmeralda expected, the knight asks her for something much more personal.
This reviewer felt the author spent too much time describing the politics of court and how horrible Esmeralda's betrothed was. A story this short would benefit from keeping the focus on the sensual encounters between Esmeralda and her Mysterious Knight. Ms. Verkirk does a wonderful job in that area and those encounters are quite satisfying indeed!
